How is the present perfect tense formed?

The present perfect tense is formed by using has/have and the participle form of the verb.
 
I/We/They  have  participle
He/She/It  has  participle

When is the present perfect tense used?

The present perfect tense is used for things that happen in the past, but still affect the present. It is used for:
 
• actions that started in the past and continue in the present
 
Example: He has lived in London for five years.
 
• experiences
 
Example: She has been to Tokyo three times.
 
We use ever or never to describe experiences up to the present.
 
Example: That’s the biggest elephant I have ever seen!
 
I have never been to Paris, but I would like to go there one day.
 
• things that happened in the past, but still affect the present
 
Example: He has lost his keys.
 
• change or growth
 
Example: My nephew has grown so much since I saw him last.
 
The present perfect is often used with adverbs of time such as just, recently, ever, never, and yet.
 
Example: He has just eaten breakfast.
 
She hasn’t finished her homework yet.
