When is the past simple tense used?

The past simple tense is used for actions that happened before now. These actions might have happened once or even repeated in the past. Sentences that use past simple tense often use words indicating what time in the past something took place.

What are some examples of the past simple tense?

Sarah went to school yesterday.
 
The past simple tense can also be used for states rather than actions.

Tom lived in London in 2017.
 

How is the past simple tense formed?

The past simple tense is generally formed by adding -ed to the infinitive form of a verb.
 
play ==> played
jumped ==> jumped
wash ==> washed
 
However, some verb forms do not use -ed and use their own special past tense forms instead.

drink ==> drank
drive ==> drove
