Personification is when something that is not human acts like a human or is like a human in some way. To identify personification, students can look for the thing that is being personified and what it does or what quality it has that is like a human.
Here are some examples:
The sunflowers danced in the soft breeze that was blowing across the field.
The clouds sprinted across the moonlit sky.
The old car limped into the driveway after its long trip.
And here are some examples from literature:
“Her dress was white and it whispered” Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury
“The ceiling danced with metallic light.” To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
“Death, in approaching him had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim.” The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe
