Imagery

Imagery Worksheet 1

In this worksheet, students identify the type of imagery (smell, taste, etc.) used in each example and then say what mood is created in the reader by each description.

What is imagery?

Imagery is a literary device whereby a writer uses vivid descriptions of things as experienced through one of the five senses: sight, touch, smell, taste, and sound. The rich descriptions involved in imagery are often intended to create a certain mood (emotion) in the reader. They help pull the reader into the story by enhancing descriptions of setting, characters, and action.

Imagery is somewhat unusual in that it is a form of figurative language that often incorporates other forms of figurative language. Similes, metaphors, and personification are some of the different types of figurative language commonly seen in imagery.
